Trio Saudade (sow-da-gee: to yearn or to long for)
Inspired by Brazilian composers Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Ernesto Nazareth, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Trio Saudade is dedicated to the art and performance of Brazilian Choro and Latin music. Choro or traditionally Chorinho means “to cry” or “to lament”, oddly contradictory to its joyful and celebratory melodies.
Choro, originally established in Rio de Janeiro in the mid-late 19th century, was the popular music of its time, akin to New Orleans jazz. Both these genres are made up of complex syncopated forms including improvisation and contrapuntal intricacies.
Recently, Choro was made popular again, not just in Brazil but worldwide, and has inspired many local Santa Cruz musicians to discover this genre in a new and interesting way.
Come on out and join us this Friday Eve before Independence Day, and celebrate with some to-die-for cocoa at the Mutari Chocolate House in Downtown Santa Cruz.
